What is Supabase?
Supabase bundles PostgreSQL with authentication, row-level-security policies, file storage, edge-style functions and realtime subscriptions, and puts a studio UI in front of all of it.
The whole stack is open source and the database underneath is ordinary Postgres, so nothing you build is locked into a proprietary API.

Getting started with Supabase
- When the build finishes, your server's page in the dashboard shows its HTTPS address, its root password and any sign-in details the installer set for Supabase. The build console streams every step as it happens, so you can see exactly what was installed rather than taking it on trust.
- Open the studio with the credentials from your dashboard, create your first table, and turn on row-level security before you expose it. The connection string for your app is in the studio's settings.
- Add your own domain from the same page when you are ready: point a DNS record at the server and the certificate is issued for you. The original address keeps working, so nothing you configured against it breaks.
- Take a backup once Supabase is configured the way you want it. A backup captures the whole server, so restoring one brings back Supabase and its data together — and it is the only thing that will bring them back.
Frequently asked questions
Is self-hosted Supabase the same as their cloud?
The core services are the same open-source components. Some conveniences of their managed platform — automated backups, read replicas, their dashboard's project management — are things you operate yourself when self-hosting.
Why is the minimum plan larger than for other apps?
Supabase is not one service but several containers running together, including Postgres, and the disk holds your database as it grows. The minimum on this page is the realistic floor, not the smallest thing that will boot.
Can my app connect straight to the Postgres database?
Yes. It is a normal PostgreSQL instance, reachable with any Postgres client or ORM using the credentials shown after the build.
How long does it take to install Supabase?
About a minute. Choosing Supabase at checkout builds the server, installs it, and publishes it on an HTTPS address, streaming the progress to your browser as it happens.
What size server does Supabase need?
