What is n8n?
n8n is a source-available workflow automation tool: you build flows on a visual canvas, connect them to APIs, databases and webhooks, and drop into JavaScript whenever a node cannot express what you need.
Because it runs on your own server, the credentials for every service you connect stay on a machine you control, and there is no per-task pricing on the number of executions.

Getting started with n8n
- When the build finishes, your server's page in the dashboard shows its HTTPS address, its root password and any sign-in details the installer set for n8n. The build console streams every step as it happens, so you can see exactly what was installed rather than taking it on trust.
- The editor opens and asks you to create the owner account, so you set the password yourself. Add a credential for the first service you want to automate, then build a workflow around a webhook or schedule trigger.
- Add your own domain from the same page when you are ready: point a DNS record at the server and the certificate is issued for you. The original address keeps working, so nothing you configured against it breaks.
- Take a backup once n8n is configured the way you want it. A backup captures the whole server, so restoring one brings back n8n and its data together — and it is the only thing that will bring them back.
Frequently asked questions
Is self-hosted n8n free?
n8n's Community Edition is free under the Sustainable Use Licence and includes unlimited workflows and executions. Some enterprise features such as SSO and log streaming are part of their paid offering.
Will my webhooks work straight away?
Yes. The server is published on an HTTPS hostname the moment it is built, so webhook URLs are reachable by external services with no tunnel or port forwarding.
How do I keep my workflows when I rebuild?
Take a backup before rebuilding. n8n keeps workflows and credentials in its own database inside the server, and a backup captures the whole filesystem.
How long does it take to install n8n?
