What is Ghost?
Ghost is a publishing platform with a clean editor, built-in email newsletters, and native paid-membership support — subscriptions, tiers and member-only posts without a plugin stack.
It is deliberately narrower than a general-purpose CMS: it publishes, it emails, and it takes payments, and it does those quickly.

Getting started with Ghost
- When the build finishes, your server's page in the dashboard shows its HTTPS address, its root password and any sign-in details the installer set for Ghost. The build console streams every step as it happens, so you can see exactly what was installed rather than taking it on trust.
- Ghost's setup screen creates the owner account and site title. Connect a Stripe account if you plan to take paid memberships, and add your mail provider before sending the first newsletter.
- Add your own domain from the same page when you are ready: point a DNS record at the server and the certificate is issued for you. The original address keeps working, so nothing you configured against it breaks.
- Take a backup once Ghost is configured the way you want it. A backup captures the whole server, so restoring one brings back Ghost and its data together — and it is the only thing that will bring them back.
Frequently asked questions
Can Ghost send newsletters from my own server?
Ghost sends bulk email through a provider such as Mailgun, which you configure in its settings. Transactional email can use your own SMTP credentials.
How does Ghost compare with WordPress here?
Ghost is faster out of the box and has memberships built in; WordPress is far more extensible. Both are one-click installs, so the choice is about what you are publishing, not about the hosting.
Do paid memberships need anything extra?
A Stripe account, connected from Ghost's admin. Nothing else is required on the server.
