What is Gitea?

Gitea is a self-hosted Git service: repositories, pull requests, issues, wikis, releases and a package registry, in a single small binary.

It runs comfortably on a modest server, which is what separates it from heavier alternatives, and its Actions feature is compatible with much of the GitHub Actions ecosystem.

Getting started with Gitea

1. When the build finishes, your server's page in the dashboard shows its HTTPS address, its root password and any sign-in details the installer set for Gitea. The build console streams every step as it happens, so you can see exactly what was installed rather than taking it on trust.
2. Confirm the installation screen and create the first user, which becomes the site administrator. Add your SSH key, create a repository, and push — or set up a pull mirror of an existing one.
3. Add your own domain from the same page when you are ready: point a DNS record at the server and the certificate is issued for you. The original address keeps working, so nothing you configured against it breaks.
4. Take a backup once Gitea is configured the way you want it. A backup captures the whole server, so restoring one brings back Gitea and its data together — and it is the only thing that will bring them back.
