What is Duplicati?
Duplicati backs up files to a destination you nominate — S3, Backblaze B2, Google Drive, an SFTP host, a WebDAV share — with client-side encryption, deduplication and incremental uploads.
It has a web interface for schedules, retention rules and restores, and it verifies backups so you find out about a broken set before you need it.

Getting started with Duplicati
- When the build finishes, your server's page in the dashboard shows its HTTPS address, its root password and any sign-in details the installer set for Duplicati. The build console streams every step as it happens, so you can see exactly what was installed rather than taking it on trust.
- The web UI opens and asks you to set a passphrase for the interface. Add a backup job: choose the folders, choose a destination, set the encryption passphrase — and keep that passphrase somewhere safe.
- Add your own domain from the same page when you are ready: point a DNS record at the server and the certificate is issued for you. The original address keeps working, so nothing you configured against it breaks.
- Take a backup once Duplicati is configured the way you want it. A backup captures the whole server, so restoring one brings back Duplicati and its data together — and it is the only thing that will bring them back.
Frequently asked questions
Why use this when the platform already has backups?
Because they answer different questions. Platform backups restore the whole server quickly; Duplicati puts an encrypted copy somewhere else entirely, which is what survives losing access to a provider. Use both.
Who holds the encryption key?
You do. Data is encrypted on this server before upload, so the destination cannot read it — and neither can anyone else if you lose the passphrase.
Can it back up other servers?
It backs up what it can reach. Its natural job is this server's own data; for a fleet, run it where the data is.
How long does it take to install Duplicati?
