What is Docker Engine?

The official Docker Engine with the Compose plugin, installed from Docker's own repository and started on boot, on an otherwise clean Linux server.

You get the daemon, the CLI and Compose v2 — nothing else — so the machine is a blank Docker host rather than someone else's opinionated platform.

Getting started with Docker Engine

1. When the build finishes, your server's page in the dashboard shows its connection details, its root password and any sign-in details the installer set for Docker Engine. The build console streams every step as it happens, so you can see exactly what was installed rather than taking it on trust.
2. Docker and Compose are already running. Copy your compose file across with scp, run `docker compose up -d`, and check `docker ps` to confirm the containers came up.
3. Connect your application using the credentials on that page, and restrict access with the firewall so that only the addresses which need this service can reach it.
4. Take a backup once Docker Engine is configured the way you want it. A backup captures the whole server, so restoring one brings back Docker Engine and its data together — and it is the only thing that will bring them back.
